The judges may have saved him once, but voters just didn’t want to keep Matt Giraud around.

The “American Idol” contestant was the latest wanna-be star to get the boot on the hit FOX series.

And now there are only four.

Giraud, the piano-playing 23-year-old from Michigan, learned that he was among the bottom three fairly early in the broadcast. Host Ryan Seacrest separated the group of five, with Kris Allen and Adam Lambert (the presumptive favorite to win the series) rounding out the bottom three.

By the end, Lambert was left sharing the stage with Giraud, as Seacrest and FOX did the usual routine of teasing the audience until the final second when the latest victim was revealed.

To help drag out the proceedings, soul singer Natalie Cole performed. She was followed by one-time “American Idol” winner Taylor Hicks. Actor/singer Jamie Foxx, who mentored the contestants for Tuesday night’s performance show, also belted out a tune.

Giraud seemed to have nine-lives on the show. Not only did he get the first-time-ever save by Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Kara DioGuardi, but he made it into the Top 13 as a wild card winner. Ultimately, however, when you’re number’s up on “American Idol,” you’re number’s up.

Matt Giraud is singing “My Funny Valentine” on “American Idol’s” Rat Pack night, as had been leaked earlier. Matt says he’s been looking forward to this week, thinks this is his specialty.

Not sure about the song choice, but he seems to have a great tone with it while practicing with Jamie Foxx. Says Jamie called him back in after they were originally done filming, gets him to change the key. Wow, it seems to make a difference . . . we’ll see.

Whoa! Great start — very hushed and compelling; wearing a fedora, he definitely seems the most Rat Pack-like so far. It’s a strong performance, probably Matt’s best this season because it’s creative and I’m going to remember it. A bit too intense and not enough playfulness maybe, it feels like he’s cramming for a final exam. Very passionate though, and big finish.

Randy says it’s a really hard song to sing, a little bit pitchy and some of the runs worked, others didn’t. Like a 6 out of 10. Kara piles on, not emotionally connected — I think I got that, too, a bit like he was trying too hard. Paula felt the connection, calls it “really impressive.”

Simon disagrees with Randy, to big cheers. Calls it believable, authentic; “I can tell that you love the music.” Calls him “absolutely brilliant.”

Matt is singing third tonight and is singing “My Funny Valentine” There are two numbers this week!

During an interview with OK!, Kristen Dalton showered Matt Giraud with affection.

KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN — The crowd at the Wildbull Saloon & Steakpit erupted into shouts of joy when “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest mouthed the words residents of finalist Matt Giraud’s hometown longed to hear: He was safe.

It would be Lil Rounds and Anoop Desai who would be sent home.

It was about 9:45 p.m., with about 15 minutes left in the program, when it was clear the miraculous fate of Giraud, who would have been sent home last Wednesday had the singing competition’s show judges not used their “save” to rescue him.
