From unplanned lip-syncing to midnight rendezvous, American Idol’s Matt Giraud dishes on life on the road, life onstage and what’s to come next for the smooth singer.
“I’m finally feeling in the groove of things on the road,” Matt tells us. “The performance part took a few to really get my thing going. Now it’s more natural. I don’t have to think about it, and I can improv a little bit here and there. And I still like my songs, which is good!”
That doesn’t mean there haven’t been a few bumps in the road…

| Who gets the next ‘American Idol’ record deal? |

We reported yesterday that “American Idol” winner Kris Allen has signed with 19 Recordings and Jive Records. Today Adam Lambert signing with 19 Recordings and RCA Records has been confirmed, though it has been a tad overshadowed by other news.
Who will (or should be) the next Idol signed to a deal from this past season? Danny Gokey finished in third place, but I can’t really see him being the next signee. He never really defined what kind of album he would make in his tenure on the show and he seems to be more excited about participating on “Dancing with the Stars.”
I think it’s got to be Allison Iraheta who signs the next record deal. She very clearly defined herself as a bluesy rocker chick on the show and I think an album in that vein would be really successful.
The next most logical choice? That’s a tough call but I’m going with Matt Giraud. With the right songs, he could have a very successful album. I think they need to play up the Justin Timberlake similarity and also get him behind the piano again.
What do you guys think? Which Idol would you like to see signed next?

Matt Giraud is the history-making “American Idol” contestant who could never say goodbye. He was a Wild Card pick and the one person the judges chose to save two weeks ago when he was on the chopping block. But Wednesday night, his run finally came to an end. He talked to us this morning about having his confidence shaken and why he’s sticking with rock music. (Just maybe not Coldplay.)
How have the last couple of days been for you, Matt?
Well, it’s been rough. Tiring. I got a couple of hours of sleep, couple of pancakes, I’m on my way.
What did you do when you got back to the house last night?
You know, I didn’t want to talk to anyone. I went and started packing up. It took me forever. I came with two suitcases, but I’m leaving with two suitcases and three boxes full of stuff.

American Idol’s judges saw something special in Matt Giraud and even saved him from elimination when he first got the fewest votes following movie night. Now, the contestant — who was sent packing for good Wednesday night — tells PEOPLE he has another high-profile fan: Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden.
“Joel’s like, ‘Yeah, man, come over and jam anytime,’” reports Giraud, who met the musician and his girlfriend Nicole Richie while out to dinner one night. “It’s kind of crazy. I still get freaked out when I meet famous people and they know who I am. I just try to stay humble and don’t think of yourself as too big before you are.”
